Mike Beacom is a veteran of the news business -- both in print and online -- as a writer, designer and salesman. He focuses most of his time these days on his freelance work. As a web publisher, Beacom’s duties include managing the content, sales and visual appeal of a collection of sites that welcome an average of more than a quarter-million readers each month. And his sales firm, JLP Enterprises, helps to furnish advertising for more than two dozen high-traffic publishers.
For the past three years he has served as the Big Ten college football editor for Lindy's Publications, and since 2005 he has contributed to Inside Wisconsin Sports as its primary Green Bay Packer and Wisconsin Badger football writer. His football work has also appeared in several national publications, including Pro Football Weekly and Football Digest. He is a member of the Pro Football Writers of America and the Football Writers Association of America.
More than anything else, Beacom enjoys working with young writers. He has taught a 200-level journalism course at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point since 2002, and he regularly volunteers his time to speak to high school juniors and seniors interested in careers in journalism.
Prior to breaking out on his own Beacom spent a year in the sports department of the Stevens Point Journal and three years as the production coordinator at the Portage County Gazette. Other local clients – past and present – include the Stevens Point Area Public School District, the Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools, the Village of Plover, and the Portage County Business Council. |
